The term "chosen family" holds significant meaning for many
LGBTQ+ individuals; especially LGBTQ+ elders. It refers to a
support system made up of close friends, partners, or other
individuals who may not be biologically related but who
provide essential emotional, social, and sometimes even
financial support. For many LGBTQ+ individuals, chosen
families are a vital source of support, especially in situations
where they may face rejection or discrimination from their
biological families due to their sexual orientation or gender
identity. They are more than just “friends” or “other”; they are
the equivalent of a brother, sister, or parent.
In fact, the need for this term affects ALL communities and
the needs for its inclusion extend beyond healthcare.
